
My client, Julien Emile-Geay, a professor and climatology scientist at USC, asked me to design a bookshelf or his office that was very sustainable. The piece is made from Lyptus wood, a hybrid of Eucalyptus and Mahogany, sustainably grown in Brazil. The species was specifically developed to replace rare exotic hardwoods, and unlike many species which take 50-100 years to grow, Lyptus is harvested every 15 years. The wood here is finished with an eco-friendly gel-coat. The detail on the sides is made of reclaimed steel.
The joinery for this piece was drawn in CAD, and then milled using a CNC router machine. Here are some various process photos:
