This project was a short exercise to design a new memorial for fallen L.A.P.D officers. The finished
structure will sit in front of their newly re-built headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. Two designs
were developed; one initial concept, and then a spin-off idea that was worked on as a team. The
final design is still under development in cooperation with the Police Department and the board.

Original Concept
Literally, Los Angeles means “The Angels.” The mythology of angels has numerous interpretations
throughout different cultures, but the common belief is that an angel is a being borne to the mission
of helping those in need, and guarding the less-powerful mortals from danger.
Design: A stylized, angelic wing that extends out towards the city, representing the LAPD’s
commitment to protect bravely and with pride. The large wing extends outward as a gesture; the
smaller feathers closer in display the names of each fallen officer.
Transparency: The transparency of materials used in this design symbolizes their somewhat invisible,
guiding hand. It also allows for full security observation of the site, and allows for a large design that
is neither physically confining or obtrusive of its surroundings.

Spin-Off Concept

Curved members of the wing continue over the paved ground, and names of fallen officers are
displayed in back-lit acrylic. There are also places for mourners to place flowers or offerings
next to names.
